His Majesty’s dragon

a.k.a Temeraire, by Naomi Novis

An absolutely charming story of a young British (and, oh my Gods, is he ever British!) sea captain, Laurence, during the Napoleon wars, who suddenly finds his career plans, his wedding plans, and his entire life crushed as he finds a dragon egg on a French ship his crew has boarded.
The dragon chooses the hapless man to be his rider, although life in the Aerial Corps, is very, very far from the civilised (if bloody) and by-the-rules life captain Laurence has lived before…
But the bond that builds between dragon and man is likely to make for one of fantasy's most beloved character duos since Frodo and Sam or Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. Neither is sidekick to the other, though, which is a grip I thoroughly like. Nothing is as boring as the non-human races being diminished to ‘pets’ or even worse ‘tools’.

Oh, and did you know? There acctually were a ship named Temeraire! Cute!

This quick-paced, and charming story is such a delight to read! Imagine Europe during the Bonaparte wars, and then just add dragons. And such dragons, intelligent, personal, self conscious, beautiful beings! I might almost believe that they are on the same side as humans…
A quick to read book, followed by A Throne of Jade, The Gunpowder War and Empire of Jade
