Faery Tale

Faerie Tale by Raymond E Feist

Ultra-super-gloriously-American dream family moves from California to the woods of the State of New York, for really no apparent reason. The father is a writer turned screen writer who made a fortune on space movies, but who now wants to develop his writing in a quaint old house (‘old’ being a relative term when it comes to USA). The (beautiful) mother was once an actress/dancer, but has now given up her career to take care of the children, with not the slightest hint of regret. The oldest (stunningly beautiful, whooshingly rich, supremely intelligent…insert Harlequin superlatives here) daughter is a bit cranky at being dumped in the middle of nowhere, but forgives her father and step-mother within one chapter. Two young twins complete the picture of supreme happiness.
Have you thrown up yet? It gets slightly better.
This dream family soon discovers that something is happening on their farm. There are strange noises at night, weird lights in the woods. It soon turns out the Faery Folk lives there, and will do so for six months before they move on. Unfortunately, not all elves are nice, and the darkness creeps closer and closer up to their door….or would do, unless the story is written with such a painfully overdramatic melodrama that have you whishing for slow and painful demise for the entire family.

This is a very boring book, written with to much ‘This Is Scary, Be Frightened, Damn You!’ sense. A few scenes work, mostly the ones where the truly evil Fool comes along (because he is a bit scary, insane elves are never a pleasant sight) but mostly this books only value is for fuel in the fire.
And the ending, where all of a sudden a new plot element is thrown in, is outrageously absurd, in a way that would make the writers of the X-Files blush with embarrassment.
Or, like a friend of mine would say: “Finish this sentence; if it looks like shit, smells like shit, feels like shit, tastes like shit, it is, indeed, __________”
