The Lies of Locke Lamora

Scott Lynch
Betyg: 5/5

If you just read one book this year, make sure it’s this one.
This is adventure, this is intrigues, this is magic and friendship, mysterious towers of Eldritch glass glowing in the twilight and elaborate plans going right out the shit – barges.
This is what I wanted from the disappointing Nightrunners series.
And so, I take my hat of and bow down to Scott Lynch.

As an orphan boy Lock Lamora really has only one problem – he likes stealing too much. And he doesn’t care about the unwritten rules that keep the very unruly, always misty, enormously huge city of Camorr together. But once he’s taken up by the Gentlemen Bastards, a small band of con-artists, his talents are soon put to good use. But even after he’s grown up and himself leads the gang, he has serious trouble to keep within the rules….and now it might cost him more than his life. For the Grey King stalks the city streets, killing at will even those thought to be untouchable, the capa (mafia leader) has his own plans for the young thief, and the brooding aura of the city’s secret police headmaster the Spider looms over all, intent to keep the city’s peace – at any cost. So Locke will learn, to his horror, that subtle though his plans may be, there are many out there a lot more cruel and clever than he is….

An absolutely wonderful book with so many lovable human characters I can not say who I like the most. Sofia, the countess botany - alchemist? She’s so clever! The Berangias twins? Such wicked sisters! Jean Tanner? Awww…he’s so cute! Locke himself? Not so bright as he thinks….
But this is also a very cruel book. I especially liked the end one of the ‘bad guys’ got. Very cruel tale, I thoroughly approve!

Quote: Barsavi realised something that too many men of the city were slow to grasp; an idea that he reinforced years later when he took the Berangias twins to be his primary enforcers. He was wise enough to understand that the women of Camorr could be underestimated only at great peril to one’s health.
