There are some entertaining ideas in this book. Magic connected to music and singing in particular - I like it!I get really fed up with Anna, though. Modesitt does not trust the readers of this book at all, and feels we need to have certain information pointed out in absurdum. We get it! Anna is a feminist! Not the kind I would hang with, mind you, but of sorts. We are suppose to understand this from her refusal to be condescended upon by men, or by the fact that she happily removes free will or kills any man trying to rape her. No, rape is not ok. Nor is Annas strategy to deal with it. She thinks Lord Jecks is hot - how can we fail to get it when it is pointed out for the mpth time that he looks like Robert Mitchum, and she just adores Mitchum. Add a splash of Sean Connery and Anna is gone. I should here point out that L E Modesitt, Jr. is a 50+ man... Anna is furthermore a psykopath. She claims to loathe killing people, and yet, without any hesistation or investigation kills thousands and thousands of people, with fire from the sky, drowning them in mud or even better, by letting an entire city owerflow with lava. Mm, I'm sure all in the capital were evil. It was the capital of the evil kingdom. My, my... Anna compares the leader of the "evil empire" to Hitler, but I few would claim all Berliners were evil nazis just by being in Berlin.
So, on a scale, this book gets a 1,5, where the ,5 is scored due to the idea of magic in music. It's an idea most of us can believe in, after all.
